When Emos get depressed, they cut themselves, or maybe buy some more skinny jeans.

When I get depressed, specifically, about not being able to find a frikkin’ job, I take out my anger and sadness by … applying for another job.

One day, my industriousness will be rewarded. Until then … I’m thankful for friends and family who’ve gone above and beyond with the help and support.

*sigh*

Where’s my resume-writin’ book … ? I need to cut myself a new CV … mmm ….

Apparently regular hugs are the gateway drug to fornication. Real Christians do “side hugs” … unless they’re married, then front hugs are OK.

Online Friendships Matter:

Here’s a link to a sad, yet also heartwarming, article about a woman who “lived alone and died alone.”

Dannell Lites’ death went largely unnoticed in her home town, she had no local family or friends, she was unemployed, she had serious Diabetes-related health problems, and she was eventually buried in a paupers’ grave, because nobody came forward to claim her body.

But her absence was noticed by her many online friends. The subsequent cyber-buzz revealed a woman full of creativity and candor, a familiar and dedicated part of an online community.

Worth the read!!

New York: The Year in Review

OK. That title is a lie. I’m not actually going to review the entirety of my first year as a New Yorker for you because it would be long and kind of tedious. However, I would be remiss if I did not do some sort of commemorative blog to celebrate the anniversary of my arrival.

Which was yesterday.

I considered doing a series of entries about the things I love and the things I love not-so-much about living here … but Sean already did that … and I have this thing about being original. Even if it means I look/act like a complete idiot. Kids, take it from me: just because you’re being original doesn’t mean you’re being cool. But hey, pride is overrated, amiright?

Where was I?

Reminiscing … and trying to figure out what to write about. Oh yes … a bit of insight gleaned from everyday experience. I am celebrating my NY anniversary by reenacting my state of physical being as it was a year ago: I am sick. When I first got here in 2008 I celebrated by becoming horribly sick and spending several days in bed. Right now, I have another cold, which was probably acquired from public transportation and my bad habit of touching my face after riding the subway. This is my lesson—don’t touch that, don’t put that thing in your mouth and dear GOD what is that thing you’re stirring your coffee with?!?!?! Apparently I have the insight of a toddler. Well, the consolation is: nowhere to go but UP!!!

Life: it’s all about learning. Stay tuned for next year’s blog where I will share insight gained from contemplating the usefulness of paperclips.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
